International Scientific School on subject “Functions and Structure of Biomembranes”, September, 2014
Multidisciplinary Basic Research Center of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), State University
The topic of membranes occupies a central position in cell and molecular biology. It has become clear in recent years that the study of membranes at the molecular level is of great importance not only in the deciphering of all cellular processes, but also in the understanding of the alterations leading to abnormal transformed cells and the understanding of the drug action. Membrane proteins are the main functional units of membranes and represent roughly one-third of the proteins encoded in the genome and yet 70% of drugs have as a target membrane proteins. Membranes are also in a focus of the investigations in soft matter physics, including theoretical physics.
X-ray and neutron scattering, electron microscopy and single molecule fluorescence spectroscopy are key methods to study structure and molecular mechanisms of function of living matter and soft matter on molecular and cell scales. The information obtained with these methods is of high value for basic science and medicine.
Major goal of this Scientific School is to provide up-to-date information about key advances in the fields under discussion. It is planned that world leading scientists in structural biology, biophysics and soft matter from different countries will participate in the Scientific School.
A special attention will be given to publicity of the scientific activities of MIPT and its partners within 5TOP100 program in the mentioned above fields. A goal of the Scientific School is to promote efficient scientific co-operations of MIPT scientists with leading scientists of the countries participants of the Scientific School and world leading laboratories. One more goal is to attract young scientists and the students to major scientific activities of MIPT.
