Individuals

Erasmus+ has opportunities for people of all ages, helping them develop, and share knowledge and experience, at institutions and organisations in different countries. Organisations

Erasmus+ has opportunities for a wide range of organisations, including universities, schools, education and training providers, think-tanks, research organisations, and private businesses. Find out more about the different opportunities available for organisations.

Financial support

You may receive an Erasmus+ grant as a contribution to your travel and subsistence costs. It may vary according to differences in living costs between your country and the destination country, the number of students applying for a grant, the distance between countries and the availability of other grants.

If you are moving between Programme countries, check with your National Agency and your sending higher education institution for applicable rates. There is also extra support for students going on a traineeship, students from disadvantaged backgrounds or from outermost Programme countries or regions.

Grant levels and fixed rates for exchanges between Programme and Partner countries are published in theErasmus+ Programme Guide.

Irrespective whether you receive an Erasmus+ grant or are an Erasmus+-zero-grant student, you will sign a grant agreement specifying the duration of your mobility, the amount of the grant and other rights and obligations.  

If you are mobile within Programme countries, your sending institution will sign your grant agreement and it will be responsible for making all payments.

If you are moving between Programme and Partner countries, the Programme country institution will sign the grant agreement. Your sending and receiving institutions will decide which one will make your payments.

As an Erasmus+ student, you will be exempted from fees for tuition, registration, examinations, and charges for access to laboratories or libraries at the receiving institution. Small fees for insurance or student union membership may still apply.

You may be eligible for additional grants from your institution, government or other sources. Check the European Funding Guide or the Study Portals.

You may also be eligible to apply for a scholarship for a Joint Master programme, or an EU-guaranteed Master Loan for a Master’s degree of up to two years.

Advantages of Erasmus Mundus

Action 1 allows PhD students to undertake a structured training programme adapted to their research areas as well as benefiting from research expertise and facilities of at least 2 European countries (sometimes also non-EU countries). Action 2 aims to offer opportunities to students from parts of the world which have been identified by the European Commission, creating consortia of European institutions and local institutions to develop the research capacity of that region and to develop lasting relationships between institutions. Full PhDs or periods of study abroad are undertaken in one institution.

Academic recognition

Before the study abroad period:

1. You, your sending and receiving higher education institutions must sign a Learning Agreement for Studies to ensure a transparent and efficient preparation of the exchange abroad, as well as to agree on how activities successfully completed abroad will be recognised. This document sets out rights and responsibilities of the various parties
2. You will receive the Erasmus+ Student Charter, explaining your rights and obligations with respect to your period of study abroad

After the study abroad period:

1. The receiving higher education institution must provide you and your sending institution with a transcript of records confirming that the agreed programme has been completed and acknowledge the results

2. Your higher education institution must recognise the credits (using ECTS credits or an equivalent system) as agreed in the Learning Agreement before the mobility and count them towards your degree, without any further requirements

3. If your higher education institution is in a Programme country, your mobility period should also be recorded in the Diploma Supplement

How to apply

Prospective students should apply through the financial institution, the universities or online, submitting the following documentation:

• Certificate of completion of the last degree you have completed prior to the Master degree you are applying for
• A receipt for the enrolment fee OR documentary proof of admission and of the cost of the Master course

Each lending institution will have different terms and conditions – but all institutions will provide interest rates that are significantly lower than commercial rates. Students will therefore need to visit the specific bank or lending institution’s webpage — where they will be able to review specific terms and conditions.  These are listed below:

Key Action 1: Learning mobility of individuals

Key Action 1 aims to encourage the mobility of students, staff, youth workers, and young people. Organisations can arrange to send or receive students and staff to or from participating countries, as well as organise teaching, training, learning activities.

Key Action 2: Innovation and good practices

Key Action 2 is designed to develop the education, training, and youth sectors through five main activities:

1. Strategic partnerships to support innovation in the sector as well as joint initiatives to promote cooperation, peer-learning, and the sharing of experience.
2. Knowledge Alliances to foster innovation in and through higher education together with businesses, and beyond, contributing to new approaches to teaching and learning, entrepreneurship in education, and the modernisation of higher education systems in Europe.
3. Sector Skills Alliances to tackle skills gap and ensure a better alignment of vocational education and training with labour market needs. There are opportunities to modernise VET, exchange knowledge and best practices, encourage working abroad, and increase the recognition of qualifications.

Key Action 3 aims to increase the participation of young people in democratic life, especially in discussions with policy makers, as well as developing knowledge in the fields of education, training, and youth.

Designed to develop and implement joint activities to promote sport and physical activity, identify and implement innovative activities in the field of sport, and manage not-for-profit events to increase participation in sport.

Duration

Your study period abroad can last from a minimum of 3 months (or 1 academic term or trimester) to a maximum of 12 months.

You can benefit of an exchange abroad with Erasmus+ multiple times, either as a student or as a trainee, but your total time abroad (study abroad periods included) may not exceed 12 months within one cycle of study.

«Cycle» refers to the level of study as defined by the European Qualifications Framework (EQF)

• First cycle (Bachelor or equivalent) EQF – 5/6
• Second cycle (Master or equivalent) EQF 7
• Third cycle (Doctoral or equivalent) EQF 8

For «one-cycle» courses such as medicine or architecture, you can go abroad with Erasmus+ for as long as 24 months.

За 16 месяцев программы Erasmus Mundus EMSIE (с сентября по декабрь следующего года) студенты будут равное временя учиться в каждом из трех институтов Европы (в Великобритании, Норвегии и Чешской Республике), у них также есть возможность пройти обучение в течение 2 месяцев в институтах-партнерах неевропейских стран (Universiti Sains в Малайзии, Penang or University of KwaZulu-Natal в ЮАР).

Магистерская программа EMSIE «Специальное и интегрированное образование» предоставляется тремя европейскими вузами и полностью удовлетворяет требованиям учреждений-партнеров в вопросах подготовки кадров системы интегрированного образования.

Ее цель — совершенствование профессиональных знаний и навыков, необходимых выпускникам для решения важных задач на всех уровнях системы образования при взаимодействии с различными заинтересованными организациями; развитие способностей, умений, практических навыков в вопросах стратегического планирования деятельности образовательных учреждений, ориентированной на интегрированный характер обучения; содействие развитию системы специального и интегрированного образования по всей Европе и за ее пределами; проведение сравнительных исследований на всех ступенях образования для определения и удовлетворения потребностей в получении образования лиц, имеющих как ограниченные, так и особые возможности.

Обучение на программе содействует укреплению сотрудничества между учреждениями-партнерами в странах ЕС и странах третьего мира. В рамках академической мобильности у студентов есть возможность:

• посетить школы и другие учреждения, осуществляющие совместные образовательные и спецпроекты; -участвовать в обучающих семинарах в целях сотрудничества с местными студентами, учеными и иными заинтересованными сторонами;
• во время двухмесячного пребывания в Малайзии или Южной Африке ознакомиться с тем, как на практике действуют образовательные программы в этих странах, что даст европейским студентам дополнительный материал для их исследовательской работы;
• в рамках культурной программы изучить два европейских языка (норвежский и чешский)
• принять участие в ежегодной международной конференции, направленной на улучшение взаимодействия ученых и практиков в региональном и международном контекстах.

По окончании студентам присваивается совмещенная степень магистра в области гуманитарных наук или менеджмента всеми тремя вузами.

What does it mean for PhD students?

Institutions themselves apply for Erasmus Mundus funding as part of consortia/partnerships which will in time award double, multiple or joint PhD degrees. These groups of institutions have to demonstrate how they can provide an educational experience and training which they would not be able to offer on their own. Once a consortium has been selected, PhD programmes and study abroad (non-graduating) opportunities will be advertised by the consortium directly. Students can then apply to take part as well as applying for scholarships. Self-funded students can also take part in these programmes.

Erasmus Mundus has two streams, the handily-named, Action 1 and Action 2:

Action 1 consists of Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorates (EMJD) focusing on a research theme (which can be interdisciplinary) at PhD level. Its characteristics are:

• Consortium of universities including at least 3 European different countries
• It can include non-EU partners
• Scholarships for Third Country and European Students to undertake doctoral programmes (research and research training)

Action 2 is delivered on a wider-scale of academic mobility (i.e. it is not linked to a specific PhD, but open to almost all study level) between Europe and “Third countries” within a designated region. Scholarships are available to support both non-graduating/short-term mobility and degree-seeking students.

Те, кто намерен продолжить академическую карьеру, занимаются исследованиями и готовятся к поступлению в аспирантуру. Выпускникам программы присваивается множественная магистерская степень.

Цели программы Эразмус для организаторов

• Развитие сотрудничества между институтами;
• Создание общности международных специалистов в различных областях. 

Цели программы Эразмус для участников

• Получение опыта учебы за рубежом;
• Знакомство с чужой культурой;
• Углубления знаний в конкретной области у международных специалистов;
• Повышение уровня иностранного языка.

Какие расходы покрывает стипендия Erasmus Mundus?

Программа Erasmus Mundus покрывает все расходы конкурсантов, а именно:

• Обучение в вузе;
• Транспортные расходы;
• Расходы на библиотеку и лаборатории;
• Расходы на оформление визы;
• Мед.страховку;
• Проживание в стране, где проходит обучение.

Финансирование по программе выделятся на 1-2 учебных года (в зависимости от программы). Размер ежемесячной выплаты, как правило, составляет порядка 1000 Евро в месяц. В случае, если на протяжении последних 5 лет кандидат на стипендию учился или работал в ЕС в течение 1 год и более, размер стипендии будет ниже. Однако участвовать в конкурсе он имеет право.

В отличие от прочих стипендиальных программ Erasmus Mundus не накладывает на выпускников обязательств вернуться на родину.

Who can apply?

Prospective students must:

• Live in a Programme country
• Have completed a Bachelor-level (or equivalent) qualification before applying
• Have been accepted (before applying) to a full Master programme in another country.  The university offering the programme must hold the Erasmus+ Charter of Higher Education

The Erasmus+ Master Loan intends to support full Master studies by Programme country residents in a country other than either their country of residence OR the country where they received their first qualification. Students only studying abroad for part of their Master’s may still qualify for an Erasmus+ grant.

Как было уже ранее отмечено требуется наличие диплома бакалавра, который должен содержать как минимум 180 ECTS (зачетных единиц). Не волнуйтесь, степень бакалавра, полученная в российских университетах, которые используют зачетные единицы, отвечает требованиям и равна 240 зачетным единицам по требованию ФГОСа. Также университет, в котором вы получили диплом, должен быть включен в Международный справочник университетов, издаваемый Международной ассоциацией университетов (найдите в документе свою страну, а затем ваш университет). Некоторые программы отдают предпочтение для кандидатов, у которых уже есть степень магистра, но это не обязательный пункт. Опять же, все зависит от требований конкретной программы.

Подтверждение знания английского языка — это обязательное условие, но требуемый уровень владения английским варьируется в зависимости от программы. Например, для программы “Big Data Management and Analytics” требуется уровень B2 (IELTS 6), а для “European Master in Law and Economics” — минимум IELTS 7. Так что, если вы не дотянули до семерки в IELTS, то это не повод опускать руки, главное — найти подходящие программы!

Lot 2: Erasmus Mundus Design Measures

Erasmus Mundus Design Measures should enhance the capacities of universities to modernise and internationalise their curricula and teaching practices, pool resources, and for higher education systems to develop common mechanisms related to quality assurance, accreditation and recognition of degrees and credits. The support is also intended to explore and exploit the opportunities offered by the European Approach for Quality Assurance of Joint Programmes. Based on the high degree of jointness/integration among the participating institutions, such integrated transnational programmes should contribute to the integration and internationalisation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

Objective of Erasmus Mundus Design Measures

The main objective of the Erasmus Mundus Design Measures is to encourage the development of new, innovative, high-level integrated transnational study programmes at Master level. These design measures should involve (a) Erasmus+ Programme Countries, (b) institutions, and/or (c) thematic areas that are under-represented in Erasmus Mundus (see Erasmus Mundus Catalogue).

Which are the criteria to be met to apply for Erasmus Mundus Design Measures?

In order to be eligible for a grant, project proposals for Erasmus Mundus Design Measures must comply with the following criteria:

When to apply?

Applicants have to submit their grant application by 26 May at 17:00:00 (Brussels time).

Applicant organisations will be assessed against the relevant exclusion and selection criteria. For more information please consult Part C of this Guide.

Duration

Your study period abroad can last from a minimum of 3 months (or 1 academic term or trimester) to a maximum of 12 months.

You can benefit of an exchange abroad with Erasmus+ multiple times, either as a student or as a trainee, but your total time abroad (study abroad periods included) may not exceed 12 months within one cycle of study.

«Cycle» refers to the level of study as defined by the European Qualifications Framework (EQF)

• First cycle (Bachelor or equivalent) EQF – 5/6
• Second cycle (Master or equivalent) EQF 7
• Third cycle (Doctoral or equivalent) EQF 8

For «one-cycle» courses such as medicine or architecture, you can go abroad with Erasmus+ for as long as 24 months.

Conditions

To study abroad with Erasmus+, you must be registered in a higher education institution and enrolled in studies leading to a recognised degree or tertiary-level qualification. For students in the first cycle, you need to be at least in the second year of your studies.

Your period of study abroad must be relevant for your degree-related learning and personal development needs, and be part of the study programme that you are following.

Your home institution and the receiving institution must have an inter-institutional agreement between them for you to study there with Erasmus+.

Both institutions must also hold the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (if they are in Programme countries). Institutions from Partner countries commit to the principles of the Charter when signing the inter-institutional agreements.

Financial support

You may receive an Erasmus+ grant as a contribution to your travel and subsistence costs. It may vary according to differences in living costs between your country and the destination country, the number of students applying for a grant, the distance between countries and the availability of other grants.

If you are moving between Programme countries, check with your National Agency and your sending higher education institution for applicable rates. There is also extra support for students going on a traineeship, students from disadvantaged backgrounds or from outermost Programme countries or regions.

Irrespective whether you receive an Erasmus+ grant or are an Erasmus+-zero-grant student, you will sign a grant agreement specifying the duration of your mobility, the amount of the grant and other rights and obligations.  

If you are mobile within Programme countries, your sending institution will sign your grant agreement and it will be responsible for making all payments.

If you are moving between Programme and Partner countries, the Programme country institution will sign the grant agreement. Your sending and receiving institutions will decide which one will make your payments.

As an Erasmus+ student, you will be exempted from fees for tuition, registration, examinations, and charges for access to laboratories or libraries at the receiving institution. Small fees for insurance or student union membership may still apply.

You may be eligible for additional grants from your institution, government or other sources. Check the European Funding Guide or the Study Portals.

You may also be eligible to apply for a scholarship for a Joint Master programme, or an EU-guaranteed Master Loan for a Master’s degree of up to two years.

Scholarships and self-funding options

PhD scholarships will be available and deadlines are normally around November-February prior to the year you intend to start. Students do not have to pay for tuition fees and if an EMJD student is studying in institutions with different fee rates, this will not have any effect on the scholarship awarded. The scholarships will include:

• Tuition fees, participation costs (including insurance coverage).
• Travel cost contribution.
• Installation cost contribution.
• A monthly allowance (corrected for each country the students go to, to allow for differences in local cost of living.
• If applicable, additional funding may be available for students who bring their spouse and children with them.

Self-funded students are also able to take part in EMJD but must consider the additional costs involved in such schemes (for example, travel costs and attendance at compulsory events/courses).

How is it managed?

The Erasmus+ programme is managed by the European Commission), the European Education and Culture Executive Agency, a series of National Agencies in all Programme countries, and a series of National Offices in some Partner countries.

Centralised activities are managed at a European level by the European Commission and European Commission’s European Education and Culture Executive Agency in Brussels, also known as the Executive Agency. Centralised projects are larger and more strategic, designed to tackle specific issues throughout Europe.

Decentralised activities are directly managed by the National Agencies which are located in each programme country, or National Erasmus+ Offices outside the EU. The majority of these projects will be implemented on a national, regional or local level and focus on an exchange between countries.
